Which paper for your paper placemats?
The 90 gsm offset is the single-service stock, replaced at every sitting. Its uncoated surface takes a pen, which helps when the mat doubles as a colouring sheet or a game.
The 115 gsm recycled keeps a slightly grey tone and visible fibres. Colours come out softer. It suits short menus, text-led designs and brands that want a natural look.
The 135 gsm gloss coated brings food photography to life and holds up better against the first traces of grease than an uncoated sheet.
The 170 gsm gloss coated adds body: the mat stays flat under the plate and does not cockle when a glass is knocked over. It is the weight for rooms where service runs long.
The 230 gsm tear-proof paper (Synaps) is a synthetic stock: it does not tear and copes with moisture. It is meant for mats kept in use for weeks, on the terrace as much as indoors.
The available size
A3, that is 297 x 420 mm, is the classic placemat measure: it holds a plate and its cutlery without overhanging the table edge, and still leaves room for a readable menu.
Finishing and double-sided printing
Gloss or matt encapsulation seals the sheet between two films so the mat can be wiped between covers; the matt version limits reflections under direct lighting. Without it, the finish stays standard. Printing both sides doubles the usable area: the menu on one face, the story of the house on the other. Our hotels and restaurants range holds the matching table pieces.
Preparing your file
300 DPI, CMYK, 2 mm bleed and a 4 mm safety margin. Keep the centre of the placemat clear: the plate hides a wide disc of it. Put the message around the edges.
