Which paper for your bookmarks?
A bookmark is handled dozens of times, so weight matters more than it does on a leaflet. The 350 gsm silk coated stock is the safe choice, rigid and faithful to colour. The 300 gsm recycled and 283 gsm Raw kraft give the plainer look independent bookshops tend to prefer. Among the creative papers, 250 gsm Rives Tradition and Rives Design add grain under the fingers, Gmund 320 gsm hemp and 300 gsm wheat show their fibres, and 350 gsm Crush Maize brings a plant-based texture. Finally, 300 gsm Synaps is a tear-proof stock made for hard use: it survives damp hands, in a library or outdoors.
Sizes available
54 x 148 mm matches the height of an A6 sheet: it peeks discreetly out of a paperback and suits novels and guidebooks. 54 x 200 mm is taller, so it shows better in a till-point display, and leaves room for a long quotation, a series list, a timeline or a QR code with a line explaining it.
Finishes and double-sided printing
Printing both sides is nearly always worth it: the image on one face, the text, calendar or your contact details on the other. Spot varnish, flat or 3D, picks out a title or an illustration. Gold or silver foil on the front turns it into a small gift, often chosen for a limited edition. Gloss, matt or soft touch lamination protects the corners and noticeably extends the life of the piece.
Preparing your file
Work at 300 DPI in CMYK, with 2 mm bleed and a 4 mm safety margin. On a shape this narrow, text sitting too close to the edge shows immediately: centre it and give it air. If your design has a coloured background, run it out into the bleed, or a white sliver may appear at the trim.
