Which paper should you choose for your letterheads?
Letterheads are printed on 90 g offset paper, uncoated and matt to the touch. It is the usual weight for headed paper: firm enough to hold in the hand, supple enough to fold in three and slide into a window envelope. The surface carries no varnish, so you can write on it with a pen, stamp it, and run it back through a printer to add the body of the letter.
The sizes available
A4, 210 x 297 mm, is the standard size for business correspondence: quotations, invoices, contracts, certificates and dealings with public bodies. It files and scans without surprises.
A5, 148 x 210 mm, suits short messages: a note in a parcel, an internal memo, a service slip, a workshop instruction. It pairs naturally with a note pad in the same colours.
Single sided, double sided and print colour
Printed on one side, the header sits at the top of the first page and the footer takes your legal details. Printed on both sides, the reverse can hold your terms and conditions, a location map or a short summary of your services, which saves adding a sheet to the envelope. On colour, black and white is enough for contractual paperwork and stays crisp through a photocopier, while full colour reproduces your logo and brand shades when the letter also has a selling job to do.
Preparing your artwork
Work at 300 DPI in CMYK, with 2 mm of bleed and a 4 mm safety margin. Keep the central area clear for the typed text. If you plan a coloured background, keep it light enough for the letter to stay readable once printed over it.
